I made the trip over to The Melbourne Stadium to see a clash between to of the biggest towns in Essex (ok Chelmsford is now a City I know!!!). Southend started the better of the two and only three minutes were on the clock when Anthony Straker fired a cracker of a shot into the top corner following a lovely flowing move. Chelmsford struggled to get a foothold in the game and the away side continued to dominate. The home sides attacking prowess was reduced to scraps as they failed to trouble the football league sides back four. Towards the end of the half the home side suddenly created a couple of openings as they finished the half strongly. The second half was a much more competitive affair where there were long periods of quiet play as both teams made changes and this broke up the pattern of play somewhat. The best chances fell to Southend though with the best two falling to Ryan Cresswell who headed over and Freddie Eastwood who was played through tried to round the keeper but ended up too wide and his ball in was headed over. The home side pushed forward in the final ten minutes to try and grab something from the game and with six minutes left they got their equaliser after a lose ball was pounced on by ex Basildon United player manager Bertie Brayley who smashed home brilliantly via the underside of the bar. This lifted the home side more but they couldn't grab a winner and both sides settled for a draw. No doubt both sides will take positives from this match moving forward.
