Romford 4 Barkingside 1

Ryman League Division One North, Wednesday 11th September 2013

Ship Lane played host to a bottom half clash between Romford and Barkingside on a cool wet evening.   The away side flew out of the traps and took the lead after only 32 seconds as Toran Senghore got free in the box and slotted past the keeper for 0-1.   Barkingside had another chance soon after as the home side were stunned after the opening few minutes.  However Romford begun to claw their way back from this early set back and equalised on 22 minutes when after a good run down the wing the ball was cut back to Tom Richardson who finished well to the keepers left for 1-1.   The match was going from end to end and the greasy pitch was helping nice slick passing and attacking play.   The home side took the lead on 32 minutes through that man Tom Richardson again.  A deep corner to the back post was headed back across goal for Richardson to power a header in from close range for 2-1.   Romford were now having a good spell and Barkingside were doing all they could to dampen this.  However Barkingside created a couple of openings towards the end of the first half and as the half drew to a close it was anyones money who would win this.   The second half was only two minutes old when Barkingside were awarded a penalty after a mis timed slide across the pitch ended with a foul.   Toran Senghore took the spot kick but saw it saved by the keeper who clung onto the ball to stop any threat of a rebound.   On 54 minutes that miss proved even more costly as Romford doubled their advantage.   A ball through the backline found Eddie Hart and he finished well past the advancing keeper to make it 3-1.   Romford continued to pressure the defence of Barkingside and shots were coming from all angles in a sustained period of Romford pressure.   The away side rode this out and then on 71 minutes almost grabbed a second but the header from a cross grazed the top of the bar and out for a goal kick.   A minute later and Romford put the game to bed.   Tom Richardson wriggled free inside the box and his shot off the wet pitch was too powerful for the keeper who could only help it on its way into the net for Richardson's hat trick and 4-1 for the home side.   So on another day this could of ended up a different outcome but such are the margins in football games can be won and lost.   Romford had the better attacking prowess though and if they can remain solid at the back should have a decent season.   As for Barkingside they leak far to many goals and will need to breach this gap if they are to have a decent year.  A very enjoyable game though and another good advert for non league football.
