Essex Senior League, Wednesday 4th September 2013
I made the short trip to Waltham Abbey's Capershotts ground for the first time to see Eton Manor and Senior League newboys FC Romania. There was no action to speak of until 12 minutes when Eton Manor got in on goal but the away keeper made a decent save. A minute later and the away team were in themselves but the home keeper matched his counterpart and made a good save with his legs. On 23 minutes FC Romania took the lead when their forward was played in over the top and he lobbed the keeper brilliantly from the left edge of the penalty area for 1-0. FC Romania enjoyed a good spell thereafter and their lightning quick forwards looked very dangerous indeed. Eton Manor did have an effort on goal on 32 minutes but the keeper beat the shot away. On 38 minutes the home keeper had to be alert to keep too long range efforts out of his goal and the away team finished the half stronger and deserved their half time lead. They continued this theme at the start of the second period when a direct free kick was deflected onto the Eton Manor bar but after this the home side started to enjoy a good spell. On 55 minutes a ball was flashed across the FC Romania goalmouth but somehow nobody touched it and it sailed away and out of danger. The home side were now on top and after spurning another chance got the equaliser there second half showing deserved on 62 minutes. A lovely flowing move ended with a pinpoint cross and a good downward header past the diving keeper for 1-1. The home side had their tails well and truly up now and five minutes later were in on goal again but the keeper made a good save to deny them. Then totally against the run of play FC Romania retook the lead. A magnificent run by their substitute ended with his shot coming back off the post and Eton Manor's defence failed to clear it properly and when the ball was returned into the box it was tapped home from close range to make it 2-1. This totally deflated the home side who began to be overrun and it was no surprise when the away side made it 3-1 on 81 minutes, again with a great goal. A fabulous ball into the strikers path was expertly struck left footed across the keeper and into the far corner. Five minutes later and a break away by FC Romania ended with a cool finish from 12 yards for 4-1. The away side were very composed on the ball it has to be said. Eton Manor had a chance of a consolation in injury time but it was an effort straight at the keeper who saved easily. So FC Romania look very good going forward and this victory takes them top of the Essex Senior League so life in step 5 football has begun well for them. As for Eton Manor on this showing they have some work to do but they were playing quality opposition this evening so that has to be taken into account.
