Great Wakering Rovers 4 Sawbridgeworth Town 0

Essex Senior League, Wednesday 18th September 2013

Burroughs Park was the setting for tonight's game as high flying Rovers entertained Sawbridgeworth Town.   Rovers started well and almost had a 5th minute lead when Ashley Hawkins got through but his lofted finished bounced just wide.   Rovers continued to do most of the pressing but as the half wore on Sawbo came more into the contest and if it wasn't for keeper Adam Seal the away side would of taken a shock lead.  First he tipped a long range effort wide and then from the corner made a great save down at his near post.   Sawbo weren't afraid to have a go from long range and they were right in this contest.   That was until 33 minutes had gone as the home side took the lead.   A free kick from Hawkins to the back post was turned in via a defender on the line by Gary Paterson (who had come on in place of the injured Billy Johnson a few minutes earlier) for the opening goal.  Some of the Sawbo players were complaining that they had heard a whistle after the ball had been delivered but that was in fact the referee blowing for the free kick to be taken but Hawkins had already taken it!!!  It was 2-0 to Rovers on 40 minutes when a mishit shot found its way to Billy Radley inside the box and he finished well past keeper Tom Selkirk to put Rovers in control.   The second half was all Rovers as they began to create chances and on 60 minutes they made it 3-0 after Ashley Hawkins fired an arrow of a shot from outside the box through a crowd of players past Selkirk.   Gary Paterson then grabbed his second of the night on 67 minutes when a poor clearance from keeper Selkirk went straight to 'Patto' about 25 yards out and he controlled the ball and then lobbed it back over Selkirk who was scrambling back but he could not get to it so that made it 4-0.  Paterson could of had a couple more but couldn't manage to hit the target.  Aaron Baldwin came on and also had a good chance but put wide after rounding the keeper.   Sawbo did try and salvage a goal from the game but wayward efforts near the end were not going to trouble Seal in the Rovers goal.  So a comfortable win for Rovers in the end and this win puts them top of the league on goals scored.
