Essex Senior League Cup 2nd Round, Saturday 19th October 2013
Manor played The Bees for the fourth time this season already in this League Cup tie at the Cohart Stadium. The game was 9 minutes old when the deadlock was broken as Dan Williams got in on goal and although his initial effort was saved by Steve Brown in the Basildon goal Williams followed up to tap into an unguarded net to give the away side a 1-0 lead. On 26 minutes Lawrence Priddle kept the home team out with a good near post save and then Manor broke and Barv Waiwaiku was in on goal but for some reason failed to have a shot and the defenders got back to clear the ball away. Priddle made another good save from Basildon forward Ben Sartain, who had a spell at Manor at the start of last season, on the half hour mark as Manor continued to keep the home side out. On 33 minutes it was so close to 2-0 to Manor. Dan Williams checked inside onto his right foot and hit a great effort which glanced off the crossbar and over. On 42 minutes Priddle was again called into action to deny George Cocklin but a minute later he could do nothing to prevent Basildon's equaliser when after the ball wasn't cleared Tom Cocklin swept home from inside the box to make it 1-1. Manor would rue chances missed as they could so easily been 3-0 up at that stage. Manor made their first change at the start of the second half as Yaw Danso was replaced by the experienced Mark Sisson. On 54 minutes another clear chance for Manor went begging as Jamie Williams was in on goal but his left foot effort was weak and rolled wide of the goal. On the hour mark Manor had the ball cleared off the Basildon goal line as the away side were well on top. Soon after Manor brought on the lively Rhys Fatt for Jamie Williams. He made an immediate impact getting in behind the defence before checking inside and squaring the ball to Brad Williams who let fly towards the top corner but the shot was brilliantly tipped over by Brown. Basildon then created a couple of good efforts on goal through their sub Angelo Ogunzaye, who was a second half substitute, and then Rhys Fatt almost had a goal but his effort was well saved by Brown. Then with 13 minutes to go the home side grabbed the lead, the ball falling to that man Ogunzaye who finished well past Priddle into the bottom corner for 2-1. Only three minutes later Manor were level once again. A header from Brad Williams was saved by Brown but only onto the head of Mark Sisson who squeezed his header just past Brown's right hand and into the corner for 2-2. On 84 minutes Ogunzaye outpaced Manor full back Tiffin and hit a shot which Priddle saved and the ball came back out to Ogunzaye who was then fouled by Max Drury for a penalty to the home side. It seemed a bit soft but Ogunzaye picked himself up to score the penalty to make it 3-2 to Basildon. Manor could not respond in the last few minutes that remained and so it was Basildon who prevailed in another tight contest between the two sides. Manor will rue missed clear cut chances and they will feel very unlucky to have lost this contest.
