Southend United 0 Yeovil Town 1

Capital One Cup Round One, Tuesday 6th August 2013

Ok so this isn't a non-league match but I ventured over to Roots Hall this evening to get my first taste of competitive action of the season.   The Blues were entertaining Championship new boys Yeovil Town so this was going to be a tough test for Phil Brown's men.  It was the away side who had the first shot on goal but Hoskins effort was easily saved by Bentley.  The home side had the first real opportunity after 13 minutes when Reid chested the ball down and turned his man but his effort went wide.   Southend were putting some good moves together but there was no end product.   Youngster Jack Payne was causing the Yeovil defence concern with his darting runs.   On 36 minutes the away side broke the deadlock.   Hoskins played a lovely ball into Dawson who hit a good shot across Bentley into the far corner for a lovely goal to make it 1-0 to the Championship side.   Yeovil were starting to cause the Blues some problems with the pass and movement and sharpness and the home side just needed to get through to the break without any more damage.   Just before the half the home side could of equalised but Bennett could only blaze over.   Yeovil came out much the stronger at the start of the half and could of made it two nil but Hoskins effort flashed across goal and wide.   Yeovil continued to have more possession but the blues kept them at arms length just about.  On 67 minutes Southend won a free kick on the edge of the box and Barry Corr's effort flew just wide.   A minute later and Cowan fired wide for the blues in a good spell for the home side.  Yeovil broke down other end though and almost scored but Davis effort drifts wide.   Yeovil created another chance with about ten minutes left but Ed Upson's volley flew wide.  So into the last ten minutes and the blues upped the tempo in search of an equaliser but couldn't conjure up anything until into the five minutes of injury time.  First Mark Phillips header was tipped wide and then from the corner Barry Corr's header was saved by the Yeovil keeper.  This was the last effort and the blues were edged out by their Championship opponents.
