Southend Manor 1 Hullbridge Sports 1

Essex Senior League, Wednesday 14th August 2013

Manor entertained there near neighbours Hullbridge in an eagerly anticipated local derby.  It was the away side who nearly got off to the perfect start after 2 minutes but Hodgson couldn't direct his free header from inside the box into the goal and the ball went just wide.   On 16 minutes and moment of magic put the home side ahead.  Luke Sands picked up the ball on the left and he cut inside and unleased a crackerjack of a shot from 20 yards out which few past Mason in the Hullbridge goal into the top right hand corner for a wonder goal to put Manor 1-0 ahead.   On 23 minutes Manor had a good shout for a penalty after the ball appeared to hit the arm of a defender inside the box but the referee wasn't having any of it.   Three minutes later Hullbridge nearly scored but good defending cleared the ball off the goaline and away to safety.   The game entered a brief lull until 41 minutes when Hicks drove forward for Hullbridge but his shot from outside the box failed to trouble Priddle in the Manor goal who gathered comfortably.   With two minutes to the half Manor almost doubled their lead.   Waiwaiku's shot into the penalty area was flicked on and put just over by Luke Sands.  This was the last action of the half.   The first real chance of the second half fell to Hullbridge from a free kick, but Tom Ranger's effort flew just wide.   Manor made their first change on 58 minutes when Luke Sands was replaced by Yaw Danso.   A minute later and Manor defender Will Peck headed just over.   Hullbridge grabbed an equaliser on 70 minutes.  A cross into the box was volleyed towards goal by Michael Edgar and it took a massive deflection of Braithwaite in the Manor defence and wrongfooted Priddle and nestled in the back of the net for 1-1.  On 75 minutes Manor made another change when Zach Toye was replaced by Churchill Chia-Titor.   Manor then had a wonderful chance to re take the lead.  Kye Jude blasted the ball into the six yard box and Mark Sisson could only direct his effort over the bar.   Two minutes later and Waiwaiku checked onto his right foot and from the corner of the box hit an arrow of a shot just past the upright.   On 86 minutes Hullbridge again won a free kick on the edge of the box but Edgar's effort went over the bar and down at the other end Max Drury's lung busting run into the box ended with a disappointing finish wide of the post.   Manor finished strongly but couldn't get that all important winner so it finished 1-1 but a lot of positives can be taken from this performance.
