My original plans were to go to the Hackney Marshes for the
very first time to take in a Division One encounter between Loxford Lions and
Newbury Forest Sunday Reserves, but the original kick off time of 10.30am
changed to 2pm, meaning I was unable to go and watch this game due to other arrangements
(lunch with the missus to be exact!!!).
I thought about giving up and just having a Sunday off, but
Something For Nothing messaged me on twitter to say they had a big game against
Essex Minors (Hornchurch) so why not come over and watch, I thought why not so
I headed for Dagenham and Bretons Outdoor Rec on what was a gorgeous Sunday morning
weather wise.
The hosts had a five-point lead at the top although the
visitors did have two games in hand and were unbeaten too, a win for the hosts
would see them open up an eight-point lead, whereas a SFN win would see them
close the gap to two points and with those two games in hand of course, so a
win either way would make a huge difference.
Both sides also had a plus twenty goal difference so these
two were the cream of the crop in the division that was for sure, but who could
get the upper hand between these two?
The opening twenty minutes were fairly even but both sides
were having trouble with their final ball, and it looked like a very tight and
tense contest was forthcoming, but thereafter SFN began to assert more pressure
on their opponents and just past the half hour mark grabbed the lead when a scuffed
shot from Elisha Bolarinwa looked to have been saved by the hosts keeper but he
could only push the ball against the post and see it end up in the net, and it
was now advantage SFN in this top of the table tussle.
The visitors then saw a goal ruled out for offside just
before the break but six minutes after the half time interval they doubled
their lead after Oscar Walton had way to much pace for the full back and
blasted past him like he was not there and ran into the box before slotting beyond
the keeper, and it was very much looking like SFN were going to win this one
now.
Essex Minors had a small spell of decent pressure on the
visitors as SFN got a bit sloppy, but it was largely a game that saw the visitors
attack on the whole, and if they had finished better in the final third could
have won this one by more, however with the last kick of the contest a lovely
one touch move saw Jonathan Vandyck get in behind to slot home, and seal a
deserved three points for the visitors.
It means Essex Minors lead has been cut to two points, and
SFN’s goal difference is also six better now, and with a game in hand you would
say the visitors are in the driving seat to win the division now, but still
plenty of games and points to play for so it’s not over till it’s over as you say,
but SFN certainly took a big stride in this one today.

Here is what happened in the other games in Division Two
today…
Belfry Sunday Reserves 2-1 Hainault Athletic
Hainault Athletic 2-0 Belfry Sunday Reserves
Horse & Well 3-1 Barking Colts
Sher Force P-P Cardinals Athletic
In the double header over at Fairlop Oak Playing Fields Belfry Sunday Reserves and Hainault Athletic both manged to win one game each, Belfry took the first one whilst Hainault bounced back to win the second, meaning they are fourth and fifth respectively, Horse & Well are third and the ‘best of the rest’ after a home win over second bottom Barking Colts, and bottom side Sher Force home game with third bottom Cardinals Athletic was postponed.
Right, finally let’s see what happened in the other two
divisions in the Essex Sunday Combination today…
Senior Division
Global 0-0 Barkingside Sunday
Newbury Forest Sunday 0-1 Weare United
Walthamstow Red Star P-P Belfry Sunday
Not many goals in the Senior Division, there were none over at May & Baker Sports & Social Club after Global and Barkingside Sunday drew a blank, whilst Weare United grabbed a second win on the spin after they defeated Newbury Forest Sunday at Fairlop Oak Playing Fields. League leaders Walthamstow Red Stars game against Belfry Sunday at Beckton District Park was postponed.
Division One
Flamengo 0-2 South Ilford Catholics
Hillford 1-0 Debden Sports
Loxford Lions 3-6 Newbury Forest Sunday Reserves
South Ilford Catholics 3-1 Flamengo
In the double header at Douglas Eyre Sports Ground South Ilford Catholics won both sixty-minute games against bottom side Flamengo to go into third spot and just behind second placed Loxford Lions who suffered a 6-3 loss at home to Newbury Forest Sunday Reserves at The Marshes, whilst league leaders Hillford made full use of Loxford’s defeat after they netted a slender home win over Debden Sports to go five clear at the top and make it five from five so far.
