Witham Town 1 East Thurrock United 3

Pre Season Friendly, Saturday 20th July 2013

On a warm cloudy muggy afternoon I made the trip to one of my old stomping grounds Spa Road (now named The Village Glass Stadium after the sponsors) for the first time in four years since they did a memorial game for my late father (who did the programme at the club for six years) so I have many fond memories of the club so was nice to see some familiar faces once again.  East Thurrock were the visitors and one of the 'Echo' teams so I had some interest in them too.   The game started with both teams trying to take the initiative with lots of Ariel battles and tackles however it was the away side who struck the first blow on 5 minutes where a ball across the six yard box invaded the Witham defence and left a simple tap in at the far post for David Bryant.   Witham then started to create some chances after that and it was no surprise when they equalised on the half hour.  A free kick was parried out by the keeper straight to the feet of Lou Godbold who buried the rebound for 1-1.   One minute later a defensive error let in East Thurrock for 2-1, David Bryant rounding the keeper before slotting into an empty net for his second.   The rest of the half was fairly even and so it was 1-2 at the break. Witham were probably slightly the better team in the second half as they put East Thurrock's back four under some pressure but they lacked that killer touch in front of goal.  Witham did hit the post from a header across goal from a decent cross and this summed up their fortune in front of goal.  The away side were playing good counter attacking football and it was from one of these they grabbed their third goal on 75 minutes, the ball being played to Kris Newby and his shot across goal nestled in the far corner for a good goal all round.   So this game was a fairly even contest with a few niggley fouls and was played in a very competitive spirit.  The only difference between the two sides was the final third where East Thurrock were superior today.
