Southend Manor 0 Bowers & Pitsea 1

Essex Senior League, Saturday 5th April 2014

A defensive error cost Manor dear as they were beaten 1-0 at home to Bowers to slip to eight defeats in a row. Both teams had their chances in the first half with Bowers testing Priddle with a good one handed save to tip the ball over the bar while Manor created two clear chances, first a cross into the box was met by the unmarked Kye Jude but he couldnt't direct his header goalwards and it sailed wide, and secondly a cross across the goal was missed by a defender and also Charlie Little coming in at the back post by inches. Bowers began to press towards the end of the half and on 41 minutes got their goal. The dangerous full back Kwasi Morfi was causing problems all half, and his closing down of Manor full back Robert Corrall-Cooper lead to the goal. Corrall-Cooper's attempted clearance went straight to Morfi who took the ball into the area and past Priddle and tapped home into an open net. A poor way to end what had been an encouraging 45 minutes for the home side. The second half Manor pressed their opponents back a lot more without really threatening to much their goal as Bowers seemed to take their foot off the gas. Manor did create one great chance in the second half when Charlie Bridgeman got through but his finish was straight at Leigham Stone in the Bowers goal. Manor kept battling away but Bowers managed to keep them at arms length just about. Bowers did have a chance but the shot went straight at Priddle who comfortably held onto the ball. As time ticked into stoppage time Manor thrust one last effort into the area and it looked like the defender had glanced past his own keeper but he hadn't as angles are deceptive and he held on easily. This was the final act and Manor can be proud of the way they battled today but ultimately they need to be taking chances that come their way when they get them. Well played Bowers in a good competitive local derby.
