Horsham and Poole Town will have to do it all again
on Tuesday as they battled to a draw in appalling conditions at Culver Road,
Sussex County FA HQ in Lancing in their Emirates FA Cup Third Qualifying Round
tie.
The hosts were going into this one as underdogs seeing as
they were a league below their opponents in this one, and with less than two
minutes on the clock it looked like it could be a long afternoon for the home
side as Poole took the lead as after Horsham failed to properly clear their
lines on two occasions, a cross back into the danger zone saw Richard Gillespie
get across his marker to glance a header into the far corner.
Horsham looked to respond and fired an effort just off target,
but the visitors were looking dangerous and saw an effort cleared off the line
before another effort was headed over the bar, as they looked to grab a second
and take control of this contest.
The hosts, who showed great character in their last cup tie
against Heybridge to fight from behind twice to win that one, send a dangerous
cross to the back post, but the eventual effort was sent wide after two home
players got in each other’s way, whilst down the other end Poole flashed a
dangerous ball into the six-yard box but this was cleared in the end.
Both sides saw another opening go by, before the hosts then
saw a decent effort saved by the keeper’s legs, and from the resultant corner
came the Horsham leveller just as the forty-five minutes expired, as defender
Joe Shelley sent a header into the turf and saw it bounce up and over everyone and
into the far corner of the net, and the teams went into the break all square.

The wind and the rain and general poor conditions continued
in the second half and neither side created a real clear-cut opportunity in the
early exchanges of it, and the first effort of the half went to the hosts as
they sent a daisy cutter of an effort across the artificial surface, but it was
straight at the keeper.
Horsham then sent a decent effort flashing across goal and
wide in another attack, whilst Poole almost got in at the other end when the
keeper was caught in no mans land but luckily for him saw a recovering defender
advert the danger.
And as the game entered it’s closing stages Horsham drilled
another effort wide of the post, whilst Poole had the ball in the back of the net
but the whistle had already gone for a foul in the build up to it, so it remained
all square.
Could anyone find a winner?
Well Horsham came closest to grabbing one in stoppage time when Harry
Sparks burst in down the left but sent a fizzing effort over the bar, and so
five minutes of stoppage time yielded no dramatic winner and it ended all
square meaning a replay in Dorset in Tuesday.
