Goals from Mia Brisley
and Georgia James saw Chelmsford City to their first league win of the season
at the expense of Southend United at The Melbourne Stadium.
This was only the hosts second league outing of the season
and they drew their first one against Hullbridge Sports, whilst for the
visitors from the Essex Coast this was their opening game of the season after
last weekend’s game was postponed.
Both were therefore looking for their first win in the
league, but the opening quarter hour yielded no chances of note as both sides
looked to try and get themselves into this contest.
As the half went on though the hosts created some chances,
and forced two decent saves from the visiting keeper, before the hosts somehow
missed from close range after an effort was pushed onto the bar.
Southend themselves also created a brilliant chance for
themselves but saw the home keeper equal to it to make a decent stop and thwart
the visitors, and they also fired an effort straight at the keeper as well.
But with three minutes of the half remaining City took the
lead when Brisley got in down the right and fired an effort at goal from an
acute angle which saw the visiting keeper get a hand to it but could only parry
the ball into the far corner of the net.
City almost doubled their lead twice before the break,
firstly when they fired over from a good position, and then secondly seeing the
visiting keeper make another decent save to keep the scoreline to 1-0, and this
is how it stayed at the break.

The early exchanges of the second period saw the visitors
volley an effort straight at the keeper and then flash a decent ball across
goal, whilst down the other end the hosts forced another save from the visiting
keeper and then fired another effort over and wide.
But the hosts were soon on the front foot and were missing
chances to extend their lead, and you felt if they could find another goal it
would probably end the contest.
City continued to pass up opportunities however the visitors
were still very much in this whilst the game remained 1-0, but with eleven minutes
remaining the hosts managed to find a second goal when James was put in on goal
and she brilliantly slotted into the corner of the net and you felt that was
game over.
To be fair to Southend they kept plugging away and finished
the game the better side, firing a decent effort just wide before almost
netting with the final action of the half, however it was too little too late
from the Blues and they fell to defeat in their first league outing of the
season, whilst City picked up their first three points.
