Redbridge 1 Clapton 0

ESL Len Cordell Memorial Cup Group B, Saturday April 10

Saturday saw me over at Oakside to see Redbridge and Clapton get their Len Cordell Memorial Cup campaigns underway, and an early second half goal from Anthony Martin was enough for the hosts to take all three points in a battling victory against The Tons.

The visitors were quicker out of the blocks and were the better side in the opening forty-five minutes, looking especially dangerous through Idries Turay, who was causing the hosts plenty of headaches with his attacking play, and they had the better of the openings too but could not find the target.

Motormen keeper George Martin had to field a couple of strikes on goal, whilst Turay himself saw an effort blocked and also send another opening over the bar, Redbridge did improve slightly as the half entered its last fifteen minutes, but Clapton’s keeper Carlos Simeon’s only real moment of concern was when a cross shot drifted wide of the far post.

Redbridge though had to do a lot of defending in that opening half but managed to dig in and get to the break level, and after the teams had a chat on the field at half time as they cannot use the changing rooms these days, the hosts came out a different side early in the second period and three minutes into the second half they edged ahead.

A flick towards goal saw Simeon brilliantly claw the ball off the line, and as Redbridge appealed for a goal as they thought the ball had crossed the line, Martin was quickest to react to force the ball home via Simeon and into the net from close range and make sure the ball had crossed the line for sure on that occasion.

The Tons had sort of lost their way a bit after a pretty decent opening forty-five minutes as Redbridge maybe sensed a second a breathing room in this contest, but as the half went on Clapton began to get more possession once again as Redbridge sunk deeper into a defensive shape but try as they might they could not force an equaliser and it meant the hosts held on to take a very hard earned three points.

It had been a better half of football from Redbridge, but it wasn’t their best display today but it’s a win and three points which is all that really matters, they will improve as the games tick by, whereas for Clapton there were many good points to take from this encounter, but they lacked a cutting edge going forward and had they had this they would have certainly taken something from this game.

Let’s see what else happened this weekend in the Len Cordell Memorial Cup…

Group A

DTFC 2-2 Cockfosters

St Margaretsbury 1-1 Hoddesdon Town

DTFC were seconds away from a superb win against Cockfosters until the visitors netted a leveller deep into stoppage time, Fosters led at the break thanks to a Ned Clarke strike ten minutes before the break, but the hosts turned it around in the second period to lead and it looked like they would take the win until Marcus Crowther converted a Mosanya cross and snatch a point.

Over at The Rec St Mags and Hoddy drew 1-1, Hoddy did lead at the break but the hosts levelled in the second period to grab a point and make sure they got something from their opening group game in this competition.

Group B

Woodford Town 3-4 Barkingside

In the other Group B encounter on Saturday Barkingside held on to win a seven-goal thriller against Woodford Town, Side were two goals up early on through Joe Gent and Reece Simpson, Woodford did reply but then further goals from Jack Gibbons and Jacob Dingli had Side 4-1 up and cruising, but two late goals from the hosts made it an interesting final part to the game, but Side held on for the three points.

Group C

Billericay Town Reserves 3-0 Holland

FC Clacton 2-1 Stansted

Billericay’s young side saw off Holland in their opening group game, Marlon Stratford gave them an 11th minute lead with a composed finish, and two minutes after the break they doubled their advantage after Max Gnandi finished off a brilliant free-kick routine before the hosts sealed the points with twenty minutes remaining after Nyan Mesuna capped a great performance with a brilliant finish from the edge of the box.

FC Clacton also got their campaign underway with all three points after goal from Lartey and Coyle (a penalty) helped them to victory over Stansted.

Group D

Hackney Wick 3-5 West Essex (this took place on Friday night, see my blog for a report on that http://pedroslocalfootiefix.blogspot.com/2021/04/hackney-wick-3-west-essex-5.html)

Frenford 1-1 Barking

Frenford and Barking shared the points in Saturday’s Group D encounter at The Drive, Isaac Westendorf gave the visitors a 28th minute lead but Frenford fought back to level just past the hour mark through Owen James to make sure they ended up with something from this encounter.

Group E

Athletic Newham 1-1 Brimsdown

Great Wakering Rovers 1-4 White Ensign

In the all Thurlow Nunn One South contest Athletic Newham and Brimsdown picked up a point a piece after their 1-1 draw, whereas over at Lower Road in Hullbridge White Ensign defeated their landlords Great Wakering Rovers after netting four in that one.

Dominic Locke first half goal separated the sides at the break and Ensign doubled that lead ten minutes after the break when Connor Barnby fired home, and it was 0-3 in the 64th minute after Locke added his second of the contest after beating the Rovers offside trap to round Scammell and slot home. Wakering did pull one back with just over ten minutes to go when Jake Gordon slotted home, but the visitors sealed a great win with six minutes to go when Locke turned provider to play in Luke Skinner who slotted home. So that concludes the first round of group fixtures in the inaugural Len Cordell Memorial Cup, it’s been a good start to this competition.

Friday, 9 April 2021

Hackney Wick 3 West Essex 5

ESL Len Cordell Memorial Cup Group D, Friday April 9

Friday night and I was over at Mayesbrook Park to see the first game in the inaugural Essex Senior League’s Len Cordell Memorial Cup as Thurlow Nunn One South side Hackney Wick hosted West Essex who are a step above in the Essex Senior League, and West took the three points after a first half hat-trick from Callum Bloss helped them to victory in a very entertaining encounter.

The tone was set in the opening five minutes, West went in front with just two minutes on the clock when a cut back found Bloss who produced a neat finish into the top corner, but Wick were level just two minutes after that when Mohammu Raza struck a neat effort into the bottom corner from outside the box.

The game continued to be played at a decent pace and with twenty one minutes on the clock Wick stunned their opponents by grabbing the lead when a superb through ball released Lewis Danquah and the striker made no mistake by slotting home, but the visitors then switched off and were caught out by a quick free kick moments later and West sent a ball to the far post where skipper Cameron Gray was on hand to tap home and level the contest up once again, it had been a crazy opening to this one.

On the half hour mark Bloss was to grab his second of the contest and a third for West when his persistence saw him earn a stab at goal from twelve or so yards out and see it find the far corner, and West now had the lead again, and then with two minutes of the half to go West won a spot kick when Symeon Taylor was upended in the box, and Bloss stepped up to convert and see West go into the half with a 4-2 lead, what a half of football it had been!!!

The second half started much like the first half had been, at a frantic pace, and after West had someone missed a chance to go 5-2 up, hitting the inside of the post, Wick pulled a goal back nine minutes after the break when Raza sent a lovely effort from the edge of the box which looped over the keeper and hit the bar and bounced down over the line, and the lower league opponents were right back in the contest.

Wick pushed West very hard in the second half as they searched for a leveller, but West kept them at bay and finally sealed the points in the first minute of stoppage time when Emmanuel Shoderu struck an absolute belter from outside the box as they finally saw off their opponents and get their Len Cordell Memorial Cup campaign underway with a win.

It had been a superb game though, thoroughly entertaining and a good contest between two attacking sides, if all the games are like this then the lucky few at these games will be in for a treat that is for sure.

Full Time Hackney Wick 3 West Essex 5

Hackney Wick next take on Isthmian South Central side Barking at Mayesbrook Park a week on Tuesday, that will be a very tough one for the Hackney side that is for sure, whilst West Essex next take on another Thurlow Nunn One South side in Frenford, also at Mayesbrook Park next Friday evening, that also proves to be an entertaining encounter as well.

I’ll be over at Oakside on Saturday to cover the all ESL Group B clash between Redbridge and Clapton, blog to come on that one as per usual along with a few snaps, and there will also be a round up of all the other action taking place tomorrow in the competition as all the other sides involved get their campaigns underway. Essex Senior League - The Len Cordell Memorial Cup 2020/2021 Preview

The Essex Senior League may have been null and voided for another year due to Covid-19 but the league has created a new competition to get us all through April and May with some competitive football in the shape of The Len Cordell Memorial Cup and Trophy. Len sadly died back in February and was heavily involved in Essex non-league football for over fifty years and had previously been Redbridge Match Day Secretary who are members of the Essex Senior League of course, so it was decided to create these tournaments in his honour and memory.

Both competitions are invitational, the Cup is for First Teams whilst the Trophy is for Reserve Teams, I will be concentrating on the First Team competition and this season’s competition sees twenty sides across Steps Four to Seven of the local non-league pyramid do battle to see who will be crowned the inaugural winners of the Len Cordell Memorial Cup.

There are five groups of four teams, let’s look at each group in detail…

Group A

Cockfosters (Essex Senior – Step Five)

DTFC (Essex Alliance Senior – Step Seven)

Hoddesdon Town (Essex Senior – Step Five)

St Margaretsbury (Essex Senior – Step Five)

Fixtures

Saturday April 10

DTFC v Cockfosters

St Margaretsbury v Hoddesdon Town

Saturday April 17

Cockfosters v St Margaretsbury

DTFC v Hoddesdon Town

Saturday April 24

Cockfosters v Hoddesdon Town

DTFC v St Margaretsbury

Three ESL sides and an Alliance Premier side make up Group A, Cockfosters sat fourth in the division after eight wins from eleven, Hoddesdon were three further places below them in seventh after six wins from thirteen games, whilst St Mags were in 13th spot with just three wins in eleven games.  This will be a step up for DTFC by two levels, but they have some decent players on show and were top of the Senior Division of the Alliance league having won eight from eight, netting forty-seven goals and conceding just four, so not a bad record indeed. Can they rattle the three ESL sides in this division, we shall find out…

Group B

Barkingside (Thurlow Nunn South – Step Six)

Clapton (Essex Senior – Step Five)

Redbridge (Essex Senior – Step Five)

Woodford Town (Essex Senior – Step Five)

Fixtures

Saturday April 10

Redbridge v Clapton

Woodford Town v Barkingside

Saturday April 17

Barkingside v Redbridge

Clapton v Woodford Town

Friday April 23

Clapton v Barkingside

Saturday April 24

Woodford Town v Redbridge

Three more ESL sides in this group, whilst Barkingside, who have competed in the ESL themselves for much of their history, currently play in the league below in the Thurlow Nunn South, and last season sat tenth after nine games played with four wins. Redbridge had four wins from nine games in the ESL and were in eleventh, however Clapton and Woodford Town made up the bottom two in the division, Woodford were second bottom having lost eleven of their thirteen games and Clapton were at the foot having not won any of their eleven games although they did have a decent run in the FA Vase, so they had won some games. No doubt Redbridge though would like to win this group and try and do their upmost for Len in a competition created in his memory.

Group C

Billericay Town Reserves (Essex Senior Reserve Division – No Step)

FC Clacton (Thurlow Nunn Premier – Step Five)

Holland (Thurlow Nunn South – Step Six)

Stansted (Essex Senior – Step Five)

Fixtures

Saturday April 10

Billericay Town Reserves v Holland

FC Clacton v Stansted

Saturday April 17

FC Clacton v Billericay Town Reserves

Holland v Stansted

Saturday April 24

Billericay Town Reserves v Stansted

Holland v FC Clacton

Billericay Reserves (also known as their U23s) are the only none first team side in the competition but they do play in the ESL Reserve Division and were doing very well this season, and they have a good young squad who will love the challenge against Senior Mens sides. The two Clacton sides also compete in this group as well, FC Clacton sat in tenth with just four wins from ten games, Holland were down in 14th (fourth bottom) in the South division with just one win, but they had only played seven games, whilst Stansted, the only ESL side in this group, were having a very good season and sat second and just two points behind leaders Hashtag United with nine wins in their fifteen games, so they will fancy a good run in this competition no doubt, and maybe even hold hopes of winning it too.

Group D

Barking (Isthmian South Central – Step Four)

Frenford (Thurlow Nunn South – Step Six)

Hackney Wick (Thurlow Nunn South – Step Six)

West Essex (Essex Senior – Step Five)

Fixtures

Friday April 9

Hackney Wick v West Essex

Saturday April 10

Frenford v Barking

Friday April 16

West Essex v Frenford

Tuesday April 20

Barking v Hackney Wick

Saturday April 24

Barking v West Essex

Frenford v Hackney Wick

Barking are one of two Isthmian Step Four sides who have entered the competition but were ESL members for a time before their promotion, they have West Essex, who ground share with them at Mayesbrook Park till the end of this season, and Hackney Wick, who will be playing at Mayesbrook for this tournament as well in this group with them.  Frenford are the other member of this group and will not be playing their home games at Mayesbrook though as they have their own 3G facility a few miles across the East End but expect Barking to be favourites to win this group and be one of the favourites to win the whole competition.

Group E

Athletic Newham (Thurlow Nunn South – Step Six)

Brimsdown (Thurlow Nunn South – Step Six)

Great Wakering Rovers (Isthmian North – Step Four)

White Ensign (Thurlow Nunn South – Step Six)

Fixtures

Saturday April 10

Athletic Newham v Brimsdown

Great Wakering Rovers v White Ensign

Saturday April 17

Athletic Newham v White Ensign

Brimsdown v Great Wakering Rovers

Saturday April 24

Athletic Newham v Great Wakering Rovers

Brimsdown v White Ensign

Great Wakering Rovers are the other Isthmian Step Four side in the competition and will fancy winning this group and maybe the whole competition after they are in a group with three Thurlow Nunn South sides, although Ensign, who ground share with Rovers of course, will certainly want to beat their landlords in this one. Athletic Newham will also give them a decent game too as they have been promotion contenders along with Ensign for the last two seasons in the Thurlow Nunn South, Brimsdown will be the outsiders for sure after struggling somewhat down at the bottom of that division this season.

Once the group stages are done, the top three from each group and the best fourth placed side will go through to the Main Cup knockout stage (last 16) whilst the other four sides will go into a Plate semi-final.  I will be covering some games in this competition for the Essex Senior League, check my twitter (@ped1980) for information on those games as well as this blog for reports on the games I attend plus a round up of every weekend of the competition.

Debden Sports 1 Theydon Green 6

Friendly Match (John Busby Trophy), Sunday April 4

Sunday saw me over at Debden Sports Club for a Charity match between Debden Sports and Theydon Green, the game had been arranged in memory of John Busby after the father of the visitor’s keeper Joe had sadly lost his battle against Bowl Cancer at the start of March, so it was decided that the sides would arrange a game in his memory and play for the ‘John Busby Trophy’.

John was a loving husband to his wife Dawn and a loving father to his son Joe, and with Debden Sports boss Martin Brazier being a dear friend to John and a neighbour too, it was something that both parties wanted to happen, and also some of Joe’s friends are collectively running 66 miles in a week in memory of him too and to raise money to help fund the funeral and they have set up a go fund me page so if you fancy donating then please do, I am sure all involved would be more than happy with anything you can spare. The link to that page is here.

After an immaculate minute’s silence before the game to remember John the teams got the game underway, and after seven minutes the visitors got their noses in front in comical fashion, as the home keeper attempted to clear the ball but struck it against the forward coming in to charge it down, and the ball went back past the keeper and into the net, an awful moment for the keeper but Theydon had the lead.

And only eight minutes after that Theydon doubled their lead when a shot from the edge of the box saw the keeper dive but was unable to keep the ball out as it crept just inside the post, and with the visitors all over their opponents they made it 0-3 on twenty minutes as they got in down the right and a ball squared across goal left a simple tap in, and you feared for the hosts at this point.

Soon after and midway through the first period the visitors made several changes to give others a chance of a run out for the remainder of the half, and whether or not this affected their rhythm or not who knows but Debden did get a bit more into the contest thereafter and seemed to have weathered the storm a bit, although Theydon should have made it four nil before the break but someone missed a one on one and hit the post rather that the target, but they held a comfortable 0-3 lead at the break.

Debden did manage to pull a goal back nine minutes into the second half when after Joe Busby had saved, the host attacker managed to slot home the rebound to at least get themselves on the board, but Theydon then restored their three-goal cushion after an hour in style when the visiting player cut inside and fired a brilliant effort into the far corner, it was a class strike and applauded by many who were there.

Keeper Joe Busby was moved up front for the final ten or so minutes, and with five minutes left came a wonderful moment when he got in on goal, rounded the keeper and finished superbly for a goal everyone wanted to see, and it was greeted with great cheers and a multi pile up on top of him from all of his teammates, what a moment, and a great moment to cap a fine day.

Theydon did net a sixth goal with the final kick of the contest when after a save was made, the rebound was poked home, and the visitors had run out convincing winners and fittingly had won the inaugural John Busby Trophy. Joe collected first the trophy from his mum Dawn who was awarding them out, and then the MOTM award too, it was so nice to see mother and son embrace, and it reminded us all of why we were all here.

Debden boss Martin Brazier also said some nice words too, which was nice, a great day for all and one that no doubt John would have been proud of too, well done to all who organised and took part, and also well done to all who attended to show their support too, it was a good day and I was proud to be part of it and to write about it, and finally, rest in peace John, you will be missed by all who knew you.

Wakebury 6 Corinthians Reserves 4

(Wakebury's Rob Norris about to loft home his side's sixth goal today at Shoebury Park)

Essex Olympian Division Three, Saturday April 3

Crikey so 105 days after I last saw a football match in the flesh, it was finally time to go see one, and I was over at Shoebury Park on Easter Saturday to see an Essex Olympian Division Three contest between Wakebury and Corinthians Reserves, and it proved to be quite a contest in which the hosts came out on top in a ten-goal thriller.

No doubt both sides were more than happy to return to playing the sport they love too, and both were looking to get their resumption off to a winning start, Wakebury sat fourth in the division having won four, drawn one and lost three of their eight games so far, whilst Corinthians Reserves had played a game less but were four places and a further five points behind todays opponents having won two, drawn two and lost three so far this season.

The hosts form in December prior to the shutdown was not the best though having lost both games they played, both at home, and both 2-1 defeats to Manford Way Reserves and Hutton Reserves, Manford Way are second however Hutton are fourth bottom and below today’s opponents, so that wasn’t so good.

Corinthians form in December was a win and a loss, they were beaten at Lakeside United 2-0 before they ended last year with a crazy 6-4 home win over Hullbridge Sports ‘A’, both of those teams are just behind Wakebury so this game proved to be a close hard fought encounter, although looking at form when neither side has played since December is probably not worth doing, but anyway it’s something to look back at isn’t it.

The deadlock was broken midway through the first period when a flick on from Billy Bonham-Dare went into the path of Will Wheeler, and as the visitors waited for a flag that never came, Wheeler prodded a first-time finish past keeper Charlie Arnold who had come to try and block the effort, and Wakebury had the lead.

Four minutes later the hosts had doubled that lead when good play down the left from Bonham-Dare saw him play a lovely ball across to Danny Buglione who took a touch and fired a lovely effort into the bottom corner, and then just past the half hour mark it was three for the home side when that man Bonham-Dare had a hat-trick of assists as his lovey ball across goal was converted from close range by Charlie Little.

Corinthians though did managed to grab a goal back when Luke Smith beat the offside trap on the left and drilled home from an angle, but Wakebury soon restored their two goal cushion when Adam Topley found the net from the right, however with five first half minutes to go Corinthians won a penalty after a foul and Sonny Woodward just about found the net after his miskicked spot kick was fumbled into the net by Shaun Lewis, and the half time score was 4-2 to the home side.

Nine minutes into the second period the comeback was well and truly on too after Charlie Marden managed to find the net from right, it was similar to Topley’s first half effort for the hosts, but it meant Wakebury’s lead was down to just one, but with eighteen minutes to go Bonham-Dare got the goal his brilliant play deserved as he scrambled home a downward header at the far post, before it was 6-3 with twelve minutes left after Rob Norris had looped a decent effort into the far corner from inside the box.

The visitors did manage a fourth goal with six minutes to go after a free kick floated into the box was headed home by Jamie Milbourn into the far corner, but it was merely a consolation goal as Wakebury run out winners on their return to action and closed the gap to the leaders in the process, ironically Corinthians had won 6- 4 in their final game before the lockdown, but they lost by that scoreline today to add a rather symmetrical element to their last two encounters.

Final Score Wakebury 6 Corinthians Reserves 4

Let’s have a look at the other results in the Division today…

Essex Olympian Division Three

Saturday 3rd April

ACD United 1 Manford Way Reserves 3

Hullbridge Sports ‘A’ 2 Basildon Town Reserves 2

Lakeside United 3 Hutton Reserves 4

Leigh Town Reserves 0 Collier Row 1

Toby Reserves 3 Buckhurst Hill Reserves 2

Big result of the day saw league leaders ACD United lose their 100% record after they were humbled at home by second placed Manford Way, Collier Row remain third on goal difference after they squeezed to a 1-0 win at bottom side Leigh Town who have now lost eight from eight, Wakebury are just behind the top three after their win today, whilst Toby won the big battle down the bottom against Buckhurst Hill to climb above their opponents and into third bottom.

Here is the latest table after today’s matches...

Top four separated by five points after ACD’s shock defeat today, whilst down at the bottom just four points separate seventh and second bottom, so plenty to play for before the season is done at the end of May. Man it is good to be back!!!
