Essex Olympian League Division One, Saturday 19th September
As I was over in the Chelmsford area at the weekend and needed to be near Broomfield Hospital, now seemed the perfect time to go and visit Mill Lane, home of Broomfield, and they were taking on another local side in the shape of Galleywood in Division One of the Olympian League.
Mill Lane is a very impressive facility & has three pitches which were all occupied on this day (First Team followed by Reserves & also Vets and A Team on other pitches) so a very busy but operative club for sure, with a nice clubhouse and outside area to enjoy, and there were plenty of people there to watch too, which is always good to see.
Broomfield are also trying to make strides on the pitch too, and they had began the season very well indeed, three wins from three, eleven scored and none conceded so far, so pretty perfect you could say, as for visitors Galleywood, their start hadn't been so successful, three games, two losses, although the one win they managed to get was last time out as they netted five away from home against May & Bakers A side.
All of Broomfield's games had been at home so far, beating Harold Wood Athletic Reserves & Runwell Sports 5-0 before a narrow 1-0 success against Beacon Hill Rovers, so it looked a rather daunting prospect for a Galleywood team who were looking to build on that success last time out, and were also trying to be the first side this season to breach that mean hosts backline.
The opening exchanges were not filled with too much goal mouth action, but it was soon apparent that a lot of the play was happening in midfield or in the visitors final third, and as the half went on Broomfield were the ones carving out the chances that came along, one such chance saw a superb save from the visiting keeper, but despite the hosts edging the opening forty five minutes, no goals were forthcoming.
The opening exchanges of the second period were a lot more lively, Wood saw a free kick well saved by the keeper, and another opening saw an effort lofted beyond the onrushing keeper but go wide of the target, down the other end Kieran Smith, who was looking very useful on the right for the home side, cut inside and thumped an unstoppable effort crashing against the upright, and after this initial exchanging of chances at both ends, the hosts began to get on top again.
And twenty minutes into the second period, they finally broke the deadlock when a ball in from the right found Lewis Chapman who managed to be stronger than his marker to head home from close range, and Broomfield had the lead, a lead they seemingly couldn't build on and missed further chances to add to it, however, once Smith broke clear and send a composed finish beyond the visiting keeper in the 79th minute, the floodgates well and truly opened.
Broomfield won a penalty in the 85th minute, Ryan Culleton stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way, only to see the referee order a retake for encroachment, the retaken spot kick was then saved, Culleton then followed up to fire at goal, the keeper tried to palm the ball over but instead palmed it upwards and it dropped just over the line before a defender tried to head clear but headed it into the corner of the net instead, Culleton was credited with the goal as said, and it was now 3-0.
Another impressive player, Albert Faulkner, was the next man to get on the scoresheet as Broomfield netted for a third time in eight minutes, the right winger shrugging off his marker from close range before firing home, and deep into stoppage time he would add his second and the hosts fifth of the contest, cutting side and firing a left footed strike inside the near post, and capped another fine afternoon for the home side.
That's four wins from four now and no goals conceded, as for Galleywood, they appeared to run out of puff at the end and were completely overrun in the final part of the contest against a side that seemed to have superior fitness at the end for sure, it's three defeats from four now for the visitors to start their campaign, they showed fleeting moments in this one, but found the hosts attack far to hot to handle at times.

Another 5-0 home win then for Broomfield, that's a third in four games, a side that has a solid defence and a very potent attack, not a bad mix that for sure, a far cry from the visitors who will have to try and bounce back from this disappointing afternoon, although they won't come up against many sides as good as they faced today I suspect. And, it's still early days of course.....
