Essex Senior Cup 2nd Round, Tuesday November 10th
Tuesday saw me over at Roding Lane for a much anticipated Essex Senior Cup 2nd Round tie between Thurlow Nunn One South leaders Buckhurst Hill and Essex Senior League leaders Walthamstow, and it saw the visitors win an ultra competitive tie thanks to an early second half strike from Charlie Cole.
Once Buckhurst Hill and Walthamstow had been given the chance to meet after the draws had been made, people soon started getting excited at the prospect of them both meeting each other, and after the hosts had beaten FC Clacton and Southend Manor, both sides from the level above, and Stow had beaten Newbury Forest (on penalties) and then Little Oakley, the tie was on.
A crowd of 272 turned up at Roding in anticipation of a superb cup tie, both sides sat top of their respective division having not lost a game for two months, but something would have to give here as only one side could progress into the final 32 of the competition and have the chance to meet one of the big Essex sides who had entered the competition.
A decent and ultra competitive game followed as expected, with both sides having decent openings in the first period, however, early on in the second period came what turned out to be the decisive moment of the contest, as sloppy play from the home side saw Cole laid in on goal and he fired an effort which found the net despite the best efforts of Hill keeper Dan Blockley to try and keep it out.
The game was always in the balance though and late pressure from Hill very nearly resulted in an leveller and force a penalty shoot out, but Stow, who have a very sold defence, stood firm and managed to battle their way to a hard fought win and take their place in the Third Round of the Essex Senior Cup.
Full time Buckhurst Hill 0 Walthamstow 1
