Coggeshall United put in another gritty determined performance to reach the Second Round Proper of the Buildbase FA Vase after they defeated Brantham Athletic at a soggy West Street, making it three Step Five sides the hosts have now knocked out along the way.
The home side were on a five game winning run and were full of confidence coming into this contest, whilst the visitors weren’t having the best of seasons in the league although they did come into this one off the back of a win at Mildenhall Town in the Suffolk Premier Cup, and had knocked West Essex out in the last round.
The hosts though started well and after Khris Oti had lobbed wide, the visitors did not heed this warning as in the seventh minute Oti broke the offside trap to scuff an effort beyond keeper Luke Avenell and into the far corner.
The visitors were really not at the races in the opening twenty minutes or so and almost embarrassed themselves at the back when an awkward back pass saw keeper Avenell just about clear with the hosts bearing down on him, but the visitors first attempt at goal needed a smart stop from hosts keeper Lewis Down after a free-kick was whipped towards the near post.
The Weavers then saw a header go over the bar before a dangerous ball into the visitors box went just past the far post, but after a slow start Brantham were finally starting to wake up and Down had to be alert to kick away a cross into the dangerzone, but after the hosts had flown out of the blocks early on, the visitors had slowly come back into the game and were probably the better side for the second part of the first period, however the home side held the lead at the break.

The early exchanges saw hosts keeper Down dive on a dangerous ball in from the visitors, just before they had the chance to poke at goal, before the hosts went down the other end and sent a free header straight at visitors keeper Avenell, and then Brantham sent a dangerous cross into the box which nipped off a defender and went just wide of the far post.
Jack Madley then was sin binned for moaning after he claimed was a foul wrongly given against him, meaning his side would have to play a man short from the 55th to 65th minute of the contest, and almost immediately after this happened the hosts saw a curled effort saved by Avenell.
It didn’t really seem to affect the visitors much though as they continued to create openings, seeing an angled effort go straight at Down, whilst Coggeshall saw a looping header claimed by Avenell, and then the visitors sent another decent opening straight at Down.
Madley then came back on to bring the visitors back up to full strength, and they continued to do most of the pressing, but Coggeshall always looked dangerous when they did mount an attack and saw an effort plucked out of the air by Avenell as they looked to try and give themselves more breathing space.
Brantham’s frustration’s were growing, and after another decision had gone against them, Panashe Mundawarara made a comment towards the referee who immediately called him over and sent him into the sin bin for ten minutes, meaning the dangerous winger would not be allowed back on until three minutes into stoppage time.
The visitors though piled on the pressure as they desperately looked for a goal to take the game to extra time, but The Weavers defence held firm as the visiting attack just could not find a way through, and after five or so minutes of stoppage time the referee blew the whistle and the hosts had reached Round Two of the competition.
