Sunderland 2 Burnley 0

Barclays Premier League, Saturday 31st January 2015

So for the 7th year in a row since my fathers death we headed up to the Stadium Of Light to see his beloved Black Cats in the Premier League. Ever since his death in 2008 me and my Step Mother have made the pilgrimage to the North East on or around his birthday of February 8th and for the last six times we have done it they have drawn one and lost five, so we really wanted them to win this one on our 7th trip. Their opponents were Burnley who were level on points down in the bottom six of the league so this was also a very important game, so the nerves were of course high. So to the game and Jermain Defoe scored his first goal for Sunderland as the Black Cats eased clear of the Premier League relegation zone with victory at home to Burnley. Connor Wickham opened the scoring on 20 minutes with a firm header following a clinical Sunderland attack. Another well-worked move created the second as master poacher Defoe turned in Patrick van Aanholt's centre. The win lifts Gus Poyet's Sunderland up to 14th place, four points clear of the drop zone. It was a welcome relief for my step mum and I as we had finally seen a victory for the red and whites, and lastly, this one was for you dad, this one is for you.
