Southend Manor 0 Stansted 2

Essex Senior League, Wednesday 12th March 2014

So finally some first team ESL action at The Southchurch Arena for over three months!!! Manor welcomed Stansted for a league match looking to build on a solid performance from the weekend when they drew 0-0 at London Bari. Stansted themselves were coming off the back of an encouraging 3-1 success at home to Greenhouse London and it was the visitors who drew first blood on 5 minutes when Iwan Lewis rose highest to plant his header past Lawrence Priddle to give the side from Hargrave Park a 1-0 lead. This only filled Stansted with more confidence and they came forward in waves in search of a second goal. Manor were struggling to get out of their own half and were certainly on the backfoot. It therefore was no surprise that on 28 minutes they doubled their advantage. Stansted won a free kick about 20 yards out and James Blackaby stepped up and planted a left footed free kick low past the edge of the wall into the bottom corner of the unsighted Priddle’s net for 2-0. It could have been 3-0 soon after had Priddle not produced a brilliant one handed reaction save to turn a header over the bar.  So into the second half and Manor did at least try and put some purpose into their play with the managers half time team talk still ringing in their ears. However Stansted were more than comfortable with their 2-0 cusion allowing them to play at a much lower tempo than the first half. Manor produced one moment of inspiration to almost pull a goal back but the effort was well saved and to be hones t this was as close Manor had been all game and for the rest of the match as well.  So Stansted ran out 2-0 winners and are now only a point behind Manor.
