Ryman League North, Monday 2nd December 2013
I made my first visit to Oakside on Monday evening for a Ryman North clash between Barkingside and Thurrock. Barkingside are having an indifferent season but sit 15th in the league following a good win at Tilbury last time out. Thurrock were sitting 4th after a good solid season so far. And it was the away side who made the better of the first half, creating most of the chances that were made in the first half, but a combination of poor finishing and good goalkeeping kept the score at 0-0 at the half. Barkingside were limited to a couple of long range efforts as they struggled to break down an organised Thurrock defence. The second half was pretty much one way traffic as Thurrock took total control with three goals in the first 15 minutes of the restart. The first goal came on 47 minutes when Thurrock midfielder Robert Clark cut inside and unleashed a shot from 20 yards which the keeper thought was going wide but it crept inside the post to give the away side a deserved 1-0 lead. On 55 minutes it was 2-0 when striker David Knight ghosted in at the back post completely unmarked to tap home a cross from the left. And it was 3-0 on 59 minutes when that man Knight turned on a sixpence in the penalty area before finishing past the keepers left hand into the corner through a crowd of players. Barkingside tried to get forward when they could but just could not muster any real chances as Thurrock's back line was very organised indeed. Thurrock continued to carve out chance after chance but they could not add to their lead. In injury time Side midfielder Corey Ellis brought Knight down while through on goal for a penalty resulting in Ellis being sent off. Knight took the penalty for his hat trick but saw it saved by the keeper. That was the last action of the game which saw Thurrock run out convincing winners.
