Barkingside 0 Walthamstow 2

Essex Senior League Premier Division, Monday 18th February 2019

Goals from Dwade James and Harry Watkins helped Walthamstow to a comfortable three points as they defeated Barkingside at Cricklefield to keep their slim hopes of promotion going for now at least.

The visitors began well and were in front in the fourth minute when James managed to get in behind the home sides back-line and lob a stranded Ryan Karrar in the goal to give the Wadham Lodge side the ideal start to this one.

Stow threatened to add further goals and saw Samrai Gebrai fire a decent effort into the side netting but the hosts should of the levelled when David Hornsby received a ball across to him and with just James Bransgrove saw his effort well saved by the keeper.

Gebrai then fired a decent effort at the hosts goal but saw Karrar right behind it to save, before Max Bolton almost got on the end of a ball forward but Bransgrove came to grab the ball before anything could come of it.

Mario Gijini then went down inside the Stow area twice in a matter of minutes but both times the referee decided, correctly so, that no penalty was forthcoming, but the hosts were at least giving their opponents something to think about.

James then saw an effort blocked down the other end before Luke Stanley curled the loose ball wide, before hosts full-back David Ottley put in a terrific cross to the back post but Hornsby got his header all wrong and saw the ball go out for a goal-kick.

Gebrai then somehow put an effort wide of the hosts post before James cut inside and fired an effort at Side’s goal which Karrar got down well to save, but it was the visitors who went into the break with that early lead.

Stow so nearly added a second early in the second half when Gebrai drilled a ball across goal but saw a defender clear off the line before James could tap in the ball, and then a long throw into the Side box fell to Stanley who could only slice well wide of the target.

James then burst down the left-hand side before his ball in eventually sat up for Gebrai who tried a spectacular overhead kick, but it was saved by Karrar, before down the other end Gijini saw an effort blocked by the Stow defence.

Reece Conway, skipper of the visitors, then saw a header deflected just wide, and then Stanley put in a cross which James could only direct wide of the target, as Stow continued to look like grabbing a second here.

Jac Folan then somehow missed when free at the back-post for the visitors, before a ball back into the box saw Karrar save from his own defender, whilst a rare second half attack for the home side saw a free-kick headed well wide of the target.

But with fifteen minutes left the visitors did grab that clinching second goal as a free-kick fell to the edge of the box and saw Harry Watkins fire a brilliant first-time effort beyond Karrar into the bottom corner and give the away side breathing space.

Gebrai, who had been superb in this contest, fired another long-range effort at goal which Karrar fielded well, whilst visitors substitute Gus Douglas sent a header wide of the far-post as the visitors looked to add further goals to boost their goal difference.

Things got worse for the home side when substitute Isaac Marfo, who had only been on the pitch eighteen minutes, was given a straight red card for dissent, and then Douglas should have made it three but saw his close-range effort brilliantly saved by Karrar.

Deep into added on time saw Gijini fire over for the hosts, and defeat for them sees Side remain six points behind third bottom Southend Manor having played a game more now, and a point above bottom side Leyton Athletic having also played a game more than them too.

For Stow they now sit ten points behind leaders Stansted with a game in hand, and six behind second-placed Hullbridge Sports having played a game more, so still a chance you would say with many twists and turns to come in the final few weeks of the season.
