Thurlow Nunn Premier side Hadleigh United put in a
terrific performance to see off Essex Senior League Premier St Margaretsbury at
The Recreation Ground and set up a Buildbase FA Vase Second Qualifying Round
tie at Eastern Senior South Side Little Oakley in two week’s time.
It didn’t take very long for the Suffolk visitors to take
the lead as they found the net inside two minutes when after Daniel Thrower
effort had been saved by hosts keeper Reece Grundy, he could only parry into
the path of James Ross who duly fired the ball into the empty net.
And it was two after five minutes as Taylor Wild diverted a visitor’s
effort beyond his own keeper Grundy into the net and the hosts were stunned and
found themselves two goals behind in no time at all.
Thrower then sent a header straight at Grundy, before the
visitors thought they had a third midway through the half when Kyle Cassell
tapped home from close range, but the flag had gone up for offside so the goal
did not stand.
The hosts first effort at goal didn’t arrive until the 24th
minute when Chancey Dash fired an effort straight at keeper Nick Punter, before
down the other end Thrower beat two defenders and sent a ball across goal for
Cassell who could only slice wide.
But just before the half hour mark Cassell had his goal when
he ran onto a forward pass and finished beyond Grundy to give his side a three-goal
lead inside the first half hour, and also a mountain to climb for the home
side.
Cassell then found himself through again but this time saw
his effort saved, whilst down the other end seven minutes before the break the
hosts put together their first decent attack but saw the shot blocked by a
defender, and the visitors went into the break three goals to the good.

The visitors came close to a fourth early in the second half
as great work from Cassell saw him burst into the box, find Dan Knight who
turned and sent a left footed effort just wide of the far post, and then things
got worse for the hosts just past the hour when striker Tom Cowell was shown a
straight red for dissent, and the hosts were down to ten.
The home side seemed to improve after this though and saw a
free-kick from Dash go straight into the arms of keeper Punter, and then with
the hosts putting some pressure on the visitors for the first time in the
contest, Ramone Cassidy-Sinclair got in down the right but saw his cross
deflect into the keepers hands.
With just over fifteen minutes remaining a good move from
the hosts saw a ball played into the path of full back Prince Madhu who then
drove a decent effort towards the near post which keeper Punter got down well
to save, and then Dash whipped another free-kick over the visitor’s bar as they
continued to try and find a goal back in this tie.
St Margs should of netted a goal back ten minutes from time
when Dash somehow put a volley over the bar from close range, when really the
tall striker should of headed the ball at goal, and then down the other end
Hadleigh almost netted a fourth when Thrower saw a free-kick sail inches wide
of the post.
Hadleigh threatened again three minutes from time when Thrower
laid the ball off to Brett Crisp but the defenders effort sailed way over, but
the visitors didn’t care as they ran out winners and progressed into the next
round of the competition, as well as £550 richer.
