Bowers & Pitsea 7 Clapton 1

ESL League Cup Final (at Great Wakering Rovers FC), Sunday 10th May 2015

The second game of the day at 4pm saw Bowers totally dismantle Clapton to win the League Cup for 2015.  Clapton had a great chance on 7 minutes but saw Bowers keeper Guest make a great one handed save from a header to keep the scoreline at 0-0.  On 12 minutes Clapton keeper Diagne was called into action, punching the ball away from goal but straight towards Bowers full back Durrant whose headed a looping effort wide.  On 21 minutes Bowers top scorer Manor had two efforts at goal, the first one blocked and the second one plucked out of the air by Diagne.  But on 24 minutes Bowers broke the deadlock as Manor turned provider, laying the ball back to Durrant who struck left footed from the edge of the box past Diagne into the far corner.  Two minutes later they doubled the lead when they were awarded a penalty after Manor was tripped up just inside the box. Rob Whitnall took the spot kick and saw Diagne save the kick onto the bar but as it came back down Whitnell was on hand to  head in the rebound.  Manor almost added a third on the half hour but saw his effort well stopped by the strong hand of Diagne but they did make it 3-0 right on half time when a corner from the right was flicked on by Whitnell for Wilson to head home at the far post for surely game over.  It certainly was all over three minutes into the second half when full back Durrant went on a run before getting into the box and firing an effort across Diagne and in off the far post for a quality goal.  Ten minutes into the half Clapton gave their travelling army of fans something to cheer when they pulled a goal back when Jake Stevens finished well from a rebound after Guest had saved the initial effort although this was the only real good moment for the Tons in this game.  Just before the hour mark Bowers made it five with more quality football seeing Manor slid Durrant in down the left and he squared for Whitnell to knock home first time with his left foot.  On 72 minutes MOTM Durrant again caused problems down the left hand side but his cutback to Salmon saw the midfielder lift his effort well over the bar.  With a minute to go Wilson saw his headed effort cleared off the Clapton goal line but soon afterwards Bowers did score as the ball fell to sub Wackers-Kyriacou who blasted past Digane with aplomb.  In stoppage time Bowers rounded off the scoring with a towering header from Durrant for his hat trick and to cap off a remarkable performance.
