FC Romania 3 Southend Manor 2

Essex Senior League, Saturday 2nd November 2013

Manor made the trip to Cheshunt to take on Essex Senior newboys FC Romania in our first fixture against them.   The home side almost made the ideal start hitting the inside of the post after only a minute played.   However it didn't take long for the home side to take the lead as on 5 minutes Vilcu's effort was deflected past Joe Williams in the Manor goal for the games opening goal.   On 13 minutes Manor's Dan Williams sneaked in but his effort was saved by the keeper.   However a minute later Manor levelled through Mark Sisson, the ball breaking to him inside the box and he finished well for 1-1.   A minute after that the home side almost re took the lead.  Joe Williams made a good save and then from the follow up effort they hit the post again.   On the half hour mark Manor's Joe Bright sent the ball over the bar from barely a yard out after Dan Williams had crossed the ball into the six yard box.   But a minute later Dan Williams gave the away side the lead when after being played in he slotted past the keeper in off the post for a 2-1 lead for Manor.   The home side then hit the post for the third time in the half on 33 minutes from a long range effort.   Despite the home sides pressure on the Manor goal in the first half it was the away side who went in 2-1 up at the break. Both teams tried to play attacking football but no more clear cut chances were made until the 68th minute when the home side grabbed the equaliser.   Baciu found time and space in the box and he slotted past Joe Williams for 2-2.  It had been end to end stuff.   Then on 71 minutes Joe Williams made a terrific point blank save to keep it at 2-2 but he was powerless to prevent Vilou grabbing his second of the game on 73 minutes to put FC Romania 3-2 up, slotting home from twelve yards out.   Manor were agonisingly close to an equaliser on 84 minutes but Tom Newell's direct free kick came back off the post and was eventually cleared.   Both teams continued to give their all but it was the home side who edged this five goal thriller.   Manor will be disappointed to have lost the game as they didn't deserve to but they will hope to bounce back at home to Ilford next Saturday.
