Southend Manor 1 Enfield 1893 4

Essex Senior League, Saturday 14th September 2013

Manor welcomed the league leaders Enfield 1893 to The Southchurch Arena this afternoon hoping to be the first team to take points off them as well as breach their defence for the first time in the league this season.   The first ten minutes didn't produce much in the way of a shot.  On 13 minutes Enfield had the first chance, although it was only really a half chance but Ali could only hook the ball over the bar.   On 16 minutes another effort from the away side, a volley from Martin, flew wide.   On 18 minutes Enfield had a much better chance to take the lead.  Ali turned Alabaster and beared down on goal but his effort was well saved by Priddle with his legs to turn the ball over the goal.  Enfield were having a lot more possession than their hosts and Manor were struggling to create anything up front as Enfield were showing why they hadn't conceded in the league thus far.   On 39 minutes Enfield finally had the breakthrough.   A cross into the box came up off Sisson's knee and onto his arm and the linesman waved his flag and gave the penalty.  It did seem harsh as Sisson had his arms down but it was given and John Bricknell stepped up and hammered the penalty home to give Enfield a 1-0 lead.   On 42 minutes Manor finally conjured up an opportunity and it was a fantastic chance too.   A free kick into the box bounced around like a pinball until it found its way across goal to Alabaster but his effort was well saved by keeper Jennings when it looked for all money Alabaster would score.   Enfield then went up the other end with Ali and he cut inside and let fly with a good effort that went just wide.   Right on half time Enfield should have gone 2-0 ahead.  First Giddings effort from just inside the box was tipped over by Priddle then from the corner the ball fell to Giddings again who produced an even better save from Priddle to keep the score at 1-0 at the half.   The second half drifted along without much action until the 65th minute with a major decision going against the home side.   Brad Williams appeared to have been fouled but the referee gave it the other way.   After a chat between Brad Williams and the referee a red card was brandished, much to the dismay of Manor.  Apparently it was for dissent.  This made the task even more difficult for the home side.   This task was proved almost impossible on 74 minutes when Enfield doubled their lead.   A good run and ball into the six yard box by Prince was headed in by Manor defender Max Drury for an own goal and 2-0.   Four minutes later and the game was settled as Harry Prince got in past Jude and slotted past Priddle for 3-0.   Manor to their credit didn't lie down and continued to work hard and on 80 minutes won themselves a penalty after Sisson had been brought down by keeper Jennings and Tom Newell became the first player to score a league goal against Enfield as he converted for 3-1.   Manor then has a brief spell of attacking play but they couldn't get past a solid Enfield defensive line.   On 83 minutes Giddings almost put the game totally to bed when he cut inside and struck an effort past Priddle off the inside of the post but on 89 minutes it was 4-1 when Robbie Evans struck a brilliant goal from outside the area beyond the reach of Priddle.   Manor nearly got a second goal when a good run from Dan Williams ended with him crossing for Sisson to hit a snap shot at goal but it hit Jennings and somehow went over the bar.   But that was the last action of the game and Manor were beaten for the second game in a row.
