Hullbridge Sports 1 Southend Manor 3

Essex Senior League, Saturday 6th April 2013

Southend Manor made it seven wins in a row with a hard fought 3-1 victory at Lower Road this afternoon. The first chance came after 4 minutes when Albert Pinto got into the box but his dipping effort with tipped onto the bar by Jack Jones in the Hullbridge goal. After 19 minutes it was Manor's keeper Adam Seal who had to fall smartly at the feet of the striker before he could have a shot at goal. Manor took a 1-0 lead on 22 minutes when Yaw Danso got to the byline and his cross took a deflection of a defender and looped up over the keeper Jones and David Tubbs was at the back post to poke the ball over the goal line. Manor doubled their lead two minutes later when Tom Hall's free kick from the right was played into the penalty area where Terry Griffiths ghosted in unmarked to plant the ball with his right foot first time past Jones into the net. Manor managed to keep Hullbridge at arms length for most of the half and nearly had a third but it was chalked off for an offside on 36 minutes. That was the first half done and Manor had a comfortable 2-0 lead. The second half was anything but comfy in the second half though as Manor never got going for the first 20 minutes of the half as Hullbridge came back into the contest. On 53 minutes Hullbridge managed to hit the woodwork twice, first was a direct freekick which thundered off the crossbar with Seal totally beaten and seconds later hit the post as Manor clinged onto their two goal advantage. On 65 minutes Hullbridge scored the goal that their second half showing deserved when a free kick was played into the six yard box and the home sides centre back James Braithwaite came in unmarked to bullet a header past Seal to halve the arrears.
To be fair it was all Hullbridge at this point as Manor struggled to regain their first half control with no outlet and Hullbridge continued to put pressure onto the Manor back four. On 68 minutes Manor made their first change when Tubbs came off and Gary Paterson came on. He was to have an assist in Manor's third goal on 73 minutes. A long ball into the box was headed back across the six yard box by Gary Patersonand Mark Sisson duly volleyed home from six yards to give the away side some breathing space. Manor made another change after that with Kemp coming off to be replaced by Welsh with 15 minutes to go. Both teams would have a good chance to score before the end, Hullbridge having a shot well saved byAdam Seal and at the other end Paterson got through on Jones but the keeper saved well.
But Manor ran out 3-1 winners in the end but it was a very hard fought win.
